We did a small bit of exploring potential environments and surroundings of the short. We knew we wanted him on an island but the scale of that island was still to be developed. We decided on a much smaller scope similar to the first sketch and continued iterating from there. This process consisted of sketching on physical pen and paper and scanning them over to Photoshop to color it.
Iterations of compositions of our main establishing shot. These served as options that we would mix and match elements of to create the final environment. The general composition ended up being much closer to the second iteration with the crowsnest in the center and low to the ground.
Different iterations exploring the potential times of day the short would take place in. We knew we wanted it to take place during the day but weren't sure about how much sun we wanted, whether we should have it be bright and sunny or an overcast day. We ultimately decided on bright, mid-day lighting.
The title cards were a fun experiment drawing from 1940s Merrie Melodies, Walt Disney Animations, and Looney Tunes title card art. The intro and ending cards were both developed in Adobe Illustrator.
Ideas for the Title Card were sketched out in my sketchbook and then digitally painted in Photoshop. The illustration was then brought into Adobe Illustrator to be integrated with the text and match the other credit screens. Credit pages were all done in Adobe Illustrator with the Stranded font created by London Villegas.
We experimented with having a matte painting for the sky behind Hardee. It started off pretty busy looking with clouds that didn't look quite right in frame so the final version was used mainly for the sky rather than the cloud placement. We would add in simulated clouds into the final short but the matte paintings served as a great reference point.
Stranded is a 20 second animated short modeled in Autodesk Maya and rendered using Renderman 25.
Stranded follows a shipwrecked crow named Hardee as he waits impatiently for any form of help to arrive. Although he's been there a while, there might be help on the way sooner than he thinks. Unless of course, something were to go wrong...
I was the lead modeling and lighting artist for Stranded, responsible for most of the prop models and the lighting in the short. I was also the environment concept artist responsible for creating iterations for our potential environment.
